TEEN BEDROOM: BOOKWORM EDITION

A BEDROOM DESIGNED FOR A VORACIOUS READER

A perfectly cozy & eclectic bedroom for a 15 year old girl to finally call her own! This bedroom is part of a whole house project (“Views for Days,” which is ongoing) in which the daughters’ bedrooms & bathroom were the priority to kick off this project. The parents felt they were running out of time to give the girls their own rooms and to enjoy their spaces before they fly the nest, so we went to work! This is HHID’s first crack at designing bedrooms and we must say, we knocked it out of the park!

The sisters are very close, but have very different tastes. We didn’t have a definitive, specific style from her to play off of, so this is where getting really acquainted with our clients and our listening powers are so important out of the gate. It may sound woowoo, and maybe it is, but we definitely used our heightened sense of energy and vibes from the house and our clients to gauge what it is they want and who they are. She was the perfect candidate to use all these very personal tools that we possess. We knew she was more eccentric, a voracious reader, mild-mannered, and liked to go with the flow. She wasn’t as outwardly “girly” as her sister, but as a ballerina, we could feel her artistic energy. We started playing with a color palette, found a rug that encapsulated the color scheme and we went from there!

Now, how else do you design for a teenage girl? Well, I was one once, so that helped! And having teenage boys, designing and shopping for girls is SO much more fun. She also trusted us 100%. The musts in this bedroom were fully gutting the closet & reorganizing it, new furnishings, soft goods & accessories, a fan, and a desk area. The biggest change was replacing the existing window with a much bigger size, and holy cow, it transformed not just the lighting, but the feel of the room. Sometimes the “boring” elements create the biggest impact! We also widened and heightened the double door closet (total room suck) with full height mirrored sliders to give the illusion of a bigger bedroom. The layout was straightforward and we repurposed her bed without painting it. If we’re ever able to repurpose something, we will! The little bookworm loves books, I mean, really LOVES books. So what do you do when someone loves books? You incorporate lots of shelving & the perfect light over the bed to curl up and read at night. We used a moodier, but punchy color palette, with patterned bedding for some interest and youthfulness.

This was a good one and we are so proud of how it came together. It’s just the right amount of mature, but still youthful and unique, just like her.

Happy reading!
